Hey guys,

I had a successful launch back on April 26th, we even made the front page of the local paper. I built my model in the same manner as yours, however I found that the GPS signal was not sufficient to allow for constant tracking.

I have opened up an I290 and do not see a u.fl connector yet. There ate still some guards on the board I need to remove to be sure.

Any advice on this?

Also, my camera seemed to malfunction about two hours in to flight. I have tested the camera in numerous ways and it seems to work ok now so I will use it again.

Any ideas on making a power cell for the cameras ac input? Could act similar to the charger with the phone.

Hope to hear back from you.

Regards,

Dave

I would suggest actually purchasing the SPOT satellite messenger. Its about 100 dollars and a subscription service run you about another 100. It increases the reliability dramatically since the SPOT uses satellite signals instead of cell towers. Did you use Lithium batteries for your camera? What do you mean by it failed? Lithium batteries should be more than enough to power the camera for the whole flight.

The U.fl connection is buried in the phone. I used a scissor to cut out a good chunk fo the plastic in order to have access to it. You should be able to see it though if you take off the battery cover.

The i290 features a removable sticker that will reveal an access hole into where the u.fl connector is. This is located just to the right of the sticker for barcode/model number. From there, you just need the pigtail to whatever male/female end connection needed.

I would recommend drilling out the access hole to be a little bit larger, since the pigtail u.fl connection requires a 90 degree bend in order to run outside the access hole. This will make it easier to connect, otherwise, I would disassemble the entire phone, remove the main logic board containing the mini-usb and audio jack, and underneath that board will be the u.fl connection.

hope this helps,

I recently found a used i290 phone. I purchased the u.fl to rp-sma pig tail. After doing some research, I’ve found that this is not a u.fl connection but a ms-156 connector. They look very similar, but they are different. The MS-156 connector is a test point.

Google MS-156 and u.fl. If you look closely at the connector on the back of your phone you will notice that it does not have the male center post that is typical of a u.fl connection.

You’ll find a lot of wireless forum discussions talking about the two connectors. MS-156 to rp-sma connectors are available, but they are more expensive.

How did you guys get your pigtail to stay connected to the back of the phone with the u.fl connector?

There is a chance that motorola may have changed from u.fl to ms-156 at some point. Do you guys have a close up picture of your connection on the back of your phone?

Thanks for the help.
